The young boy, believed to be aged 2, died in the incident near Rose Park Farm in Ballymoney on Friday night.

Emergency services including the PSNI are believed to be at the scene.

Local DUP councilor Mervyn Storey said the tragedy was “indescribable, beyond words”.

“They would be a well known family in the area and very well respected,” he told the Belfast Telegraph.

“I know, and we sometimes say it as a form of words, that it will send shockwaves through Ballymoney.

“Ballymoney is a small town in many ways, everyone knows everyone and when something like this happens it affects us all.

“You can’t imagine. Our thoughts and prayers are with them. I would ask people to be there for them and give them all the support they need. It’s just a tragedy.”

Local councilor Darryl Wilson wrote on social media: “The whole community is heartbroken as the news of the terrible tragedy in our town comes out this evening.

“No words can express how we feel, our collective hearts, thoughts and prayers go out to all those affected by this devastating loss.”
