Solent LEP sponsors I-Construct to inspire young people to enter the construction industry FindSexyJobs

FSJ News Updates,

SCHOOLCHILDREN are invited to explore future careers in the construction industry this autumn at a two-day skills workshop supported by the Solent Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP).

The event will be spearheaded by civil engineering and construction experts, while young participants will tackle a range of challenges as they explore the world of the construction sector.

Around 750 Year 7 to 11 pupils from across the Solent will work in small teams and be invited to interviews with building professionals and civil engineers to develop a plan.

A plan will be created to solve a hypothetical incident, such as a sinkhole around a hospital, and the top 10 plans will win a prize.

Brooke Hoskins, Solent LEP’s Executive Director for Skills, said: “We are delighted to have been given the opportunity to sponsor the Best Innovative Idea Award category and be part of the judging panel. Events such as these really support raising awareness amongst young people of potential careers in construction and helping to reduce potential skills gaps in the future.

“Our careers and skills team work hard all year round to promote links between industry and education. This work and this type of region-wide event goes a long way to preparing young people for the world of work and showing them some of the opportunities.” within specific industries that support a better economic future for the region.”

Jason Woodward, SHEQ Manager at PT Contractors, who is managing the project, said: “There are over 250 direct career paths in construction and civil engineering and a similar number of indirect roles in various support areas, from material suppliers, product manufacturers. for training, equipment and racing. We find that career leaders, parents and young people are often unaware of this. It is important to ensure the future success of the construction and built environment sector, which is why we are excited to host the I-Construct event this October to educate and inspire young people about the potential future in the industry.

“The event is supported by many wonderful and talented people from the construction industry, all from a range of local businesses who want to encourage young people to consider a career in construction in the Solent.”

Many organizations sponsor the important regional event, including Fareham College, who provide their new, state-of-the-art facilities at the Civil Engineering Training Center (CETC) and the Center of Excellence in Engineering, Manufacturing and Advanced Skills Training (CMAST). ).

The event is supported by approximately 25 companies and organizations and many other sponsorship prizes.

The Hampshire Construction Training Association (HCTA) and the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) were involved from the start, endorsing and supporting the proposed action.

Students will be able to try out a range of professional simulators including driving an excavator, a huge bulldozer or a dump truck.

Experts from many building and construction companies will be volunteering to attend on the day and will be available to students to talk to them about their specific roles and aspects of the plan they need to develop to achieve the award.

As well as the workshop challenges for young people, an open evening is planned for Thursday 6th October from 6-8pm where many local employers will have the opportunity to speak to adults and students about potential construction careers and the many routes they could take.

Jason added: “We hope to dispel the myths surrounding some of the misconceptions about working in the industry and attract a diverse group of people and ages to the open evening. Attendees of the evening will even have the opportunity to try out the many simulators available or get hands-on with some of the latest digital technology used in the industry.”
