FSJ News Updates,
Leah McCourt returned to winning ways in the Octagon with a unanimous decision victory over Dayana Silva at Bellator 285 at the 3Arena in Dublin.
she Lisburn woman controlled the match on the scoresheets, beating the Brazilian 29-28 30-27 30-27 after three grueling rounds to bounce back from her previous defeat.
It was a welcome return to the ring for McCourt, who was beaten just over two weeks after contracting Covid-19 by Sinead Kavanagh in February, in what was billed as the biggest fight in Irish women’s MMA history.
But she was reminded of what she is capable of with a comfortable win over Silva in Dublin, finishing first on all three scorecards and improving her record to 7-2.
McCourt was able to survive a first-round takedown attempt from Silva and finished the round the stronger, applying some pressure as the bell moved and using her longer reach in the second round to keep her opponent at bay.
Knowing she had to end the fight before the final bell, Silva went on the offensive in the third round, but McCourt fought smart, doing good dodge work to stay alive and even landing a few counter punches in return.
The judges’ scores handed McCourt the victory, much to the delight of the home crowd, and she will now focus on bigger fights down the line.
